CHARACTER INFO

Character: Nico di Angelo
Canon: Percy Jackson and the Olympians/Heroes of Olympus. Between the Heroes of Olympus books and Trials of Apollo.
Age: 14

Background Information: wiki link

Personality: Nico is a young man starting to recover from several traumatic experiences over the span of three years that had left him on edge and feeling broken. These events have left him feeling isolated from others. There were other reasons he felt isolated; being the son of Hades, a god who is unwelcomed by his Olympian family, an attitude that is usually extended to his children, being from a different century, and being gay. Growing up in Mussolini’s Italy didn’t help with the latter. He’s trying very hard to get over his fear of being rejected. It’s hard, but he’s trying. And he’s more comfortable about being open about himself. Mostly.

Underneath the trauma, though, is a young man who’s more than a bit of a geek. He loves stories, loves knowing how things work, and has a passion for games. He can be rather obsessed with things; he’s introduced as a geeky eleven-year-old trying to make sense of the world he was thrust into by relating it to the card game Mythomagic, his favorite game. He would go and on about Mythomagic to anyone who would listen. And anyone who didn’t want to listen. Before Mythomagic, he loved pirate stories. Whenever anything perks his interest, he’ll ask every question he can think of, though now that he’s older, he’ll try to control this urge. But sometimes, especially with something that he’s really interested in, he'll revert to the kid who loves learning and a little blind to how more macabre things might be unsettling to others.

He doesn’t have much of a filter and will usually say what’s on his mind. He tries to be polite, but his lack of people skills is at odds with that, and sometimes snark comes out instead. If he’s snarky with someone, it’s because he’s grown more comfortable with them. Nico also acts more mature than he actually is. He puts on a good show, but he’s not above throwing a tantrum when he feels he is entitled to. He knows he’s scary and powerful and freaks people out. And sometimes, he’s going to use that to his advantage. Also, he gets a kick out of creeping people. Then complain about how everyone hates him because he’s creepy. The connection between the two is one he hasn't quite made.

However, despite not having much of a filter, he does keep secrets pretty well, especially if they were entrusted to him by either someone he cares about or appealed to his sense of duty. This is best illustrated when he didn't tell Percy that he knew him in the Son of Neptune while Percy had his memory wiped by Hera.

Nico puts very high importance on family and has a bit of a sister complex. He was very attached to his older sister Bianca, and her death and the discovery of his parentage were extremely hard on him. He adores his sister Hazel, and before accepting the fact that people won’t hate him on sight, she was the only person he was warm to after Bianca’s death. He puts Bianca’s memory on a pedestal and becomes very angry when he thinks someone disrespects her.

Another important aspect of Nico's character is his innate kindness. He speaks to those people who are overlooked or are looked down on and treats them with respect. He was the first demigod in years to talk to Hestia when most ignored her. He spoke and befriended the amnesiac Titan Iapetus, or Bob as he had been going by, making sure he was okay and talking to him consistently enough that the Titan considered him trustworthy and would go and protect Percy based on what Nico told him.

Nico usually tries to be kind and polite, even when he thinks people will hate him. When was recovering from his time in Tartarus, he was more on edge than usual, but he never initially antagonized anyone. He got angry with Jason when the other boy tried to convince him that he wouldn’t be reviled for being himself, one of those tantrums I mentioned earlier. Meeting other people who shared Jason’s view; Will, who would eventually become his boyfriend, Lou Ellen, and Cecil, helped make him realize that it would be okay to be himself.

Nico’s self-esteem is very low, to the point where I would even describe it as self-hatred at some points in the story, especially after his trip through Tartarus, which really messes with people’s heads. He is getting better, but healing is never straightforward. He's in a good place right now, but that might change.

He has very little in the way of self-preservation. A lot of this stems from his low self-esteem, making him think that if anyone’s going to die, it might as well be him. The mission is more important than his well-being. This is also something he’s supposed to be working on, but it’s low on the list of his priorities.

Nico's a very religious person, though not exactly the way people might think when they hear that. Growing up in a very Catholic country, even if he doesn’t remember much of it, was the foundation for his current mindset. He might not like the gods that make up his family, but he respects most, especially his father. Eros/Cupid is the god he hates the most and the only one he won't show any respect to because the god forced him out of closest before he was ready. Hera/Juno and Zeus/Jupiter he dislikes, but shows them respect to their faces, and he has a complicated relationship with Persephone/Proserpina, his stepmother, and Demeter/Ceres. He is respectful to their faces at the very least. Though if someone he cares about safety is at stake, he is not about threatening a god. Most of his religious focus is on death. There are rituals that should be followed, especially when it comes to honoring the dead. The dead deserve respect; he treats his zombies with respect, and he treats the ghosts he summons with respect. He’ll give them actual food instead of the entrails of roadkill, the last rites are essential to him, and he cares a lot if they’re done right or not.

Abilities & Inventory:

As the son of one of Kronos’ sons (because apparently Demeter doesn’t give her children as much power normally, and neither Hestia nor Hera will ever have demigod children), Nico’s powers many are varied. However, with the canon point I’m going with, Nico is already nerfed due to overusing his powers during the war with the Giants. The most he’s going to be able to do is summon a maximum of five skeletons at once and some shadow travel, which will take a few hours for him to recover from.

I’m assuming there will be no way to summon soldiers from his father’s realm in this world, so he won’t have access to his usual crew, and will have to make new friends with others.

On his person, he has three very important items; his stygian iron sword, falcata style, which he usually wears on his belt, his silver skull ring, which was a present from Bianca, and a scroll from Leo which is basically a video message about he’s on his way back from rescuing Calypso. He takes it out when he wants to be angry. The stygian sword is deadly to wield for those who aren’t chthonic deities or their children. It can absorb the essence of monsters, preventing them from reforming in Tartarus. Unlike Celestial Bronze, it affects mortals and immortals.

ARMADA SELECTION

Corsairs

He can fit into either, so if you need someone to become a Paladin, that’s fine. Going with Corsairs because as small child, he was obsessed with pirates.
